site of the Seamen's Church, and to petition

His Excellency to issue the usual imtructions

to the Surveyor General to prepare a grant.

(2). That the Chairman be requested to sign the fell-

cwing Memorial to His Excellency the Lieut-

Governor and the Legislative Council, for a grant

in aid etc., etc. (to be presented through the

Colonial Secretary).

At this meeting the Bishop of Victoris banded to Mr. Whittall,

(Mosers. Jardins & Matheson & Co.), Treasurer, two cheques, one

for $1,415,07 being £300 presented by the largesson family,

and the second for $923,08 being £200 collected by the Bishop of Victoria. A public appeal for subscriptions was immediately made through the colume of the Daily Press in which the fell- owing statement appeared; -

"The Committee of the Sailors' Home with permission of the Government give an excellent site adjoining the Institution and the Harbour, and give their fullsanction to a design so

calculated to benefit the Home and to prove so great an accommodation to the many European residents at West Point." Over £500 was raised from the community within a fortnight. Further, the Government not only sanctioned the gift of the site for the purposes of a Church but also gave a grant of $2500 towards the building fund.

The appeal having been so successful it was decided to proceed at once with the erection of a Church and a design was accepted giving accommodation for nearly 200 it was stated that 50 seats should be reserved for seamen,
